South Padre Island

South Padre Island
South Padre Island is at the southeastern tip of Texas, near Mexico. The tropical area features dynamite weather throughout the year, myriad ocean-based activities, and excellent tourist infrastructure including lodging, dining, and nightlife. Main streets are lively and appealing with many interesting shops. The year-round destination is a 33-mile long barrier reef more than half a mile wide at the broadest point. Vibrant and scenic South Padre Island Texas eschews everything “workday,” going as far as to ban ties, declaring Padre Island a “No Tie Zone.” As an offender, you’ll receive a free island t-shirt and a written “warning.”

On the north island end is Padre Island National Seashore where both Big and Little Shell Beach are located, both excellent shell beaches. The west side of South Padre Island features a larger number of the island’s businesses and residential areas along with the bay area. This section of South Padre is linked to the mainland by Queen Isabella Causeway via Port Isabel, southeast of Laguna Heights. The east is the ocean playground, a mix of beach hotels, vacation rentals, shops, and restaurants skirt the longest, undeveloped barrier reef on the continent. There are both city and county beaches lining the shore with access every few blocks.

Paddle boating and kayaking are popular activities for exploring the coast. Jet skiing, boogie boarding, and wind and kitesurfing are also possible. Or, immerse entirely in the ocean by scuba diving or snorkeling offshore. There are both city and county beaches lining the shore with access every few blocks. At the northern part of the island are isolated beaches and dunes perfect for families looking for things to do and offering sublime ocean and bay views.

Fishing around the bay on the west or off the east beaches on South Padre Island Texas, you’re bound to finish the day with a variety of catches. Wade fishing, jetty fishing, shore fishing, and offshore deep sea fishing can yield the likes of flounder, red snapper, marlin, and more. The west’s Laguna Madre is a big attraction for kite boarders and wind surfers, with strong winds flying over the bay.
