And with so much so close, it’s easy to add a day at the beach to your vacation plans.
Misquamicut Beach is easy to find in the town of Westerly, nestled on the southwestern tip of island, close to Connecticut and Interstate 95. Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, two of the most popular casinos in New England, are within 15 miles. The beaches and mansions of Newport are about 40 miles to the east, while Providence is about 45 miles to the north. Thanks to Rhode Island’s status as America’s smallest state, it never takes long to get from one point to the next in the Ocean State.
Wherever you begin the day, it won’t take take long to to starting have fun at Misquamicut State Beach; entry fees include parking and depend on when you visit. After 6 p.m., it’s free to get into Misquamicut State Beach RI. During the day, you’ll pay under $10 per car if you’re a resident or double that for out-of-staters. On the weekends, the rates go up a few dollars, and seniors always pay half price. If you’d prefer to just pay once, purchase a season pass. For less than the price of a dinner out, you’ll enjoy access to the beach whenever you want. All you need to do is show up and start having fun.
The 51-acre park is open year-round, and lifeguards are on duty in the summertime when weather permits. As you’d expect for Rhode Island beaches, the high season for Misquamicut Beach stretches from Memorial Day into September. You’ll find a long strip of sand where you can stretch out in the sun and enjoy a good book or a long nap. The park also a pavilion, perfect for a picnic, and plenty of open water for swimming or fishing.
Nearby, the long stretch of sand that includes Misquamicut State Beach RI is home to even more fun. There’s plenty of parking, along with a whole lot of fun to be had. Kids of all ages will enjoy a whirl on the carousel or a zoom on the go-karts. You’ll also find batting cages, water slides, and miniature golf along Westerly’s scenic shores. A host of local outfitters can get you going on watersports, renting equipment, and providing guides for a host of thrilling ocean fun. Jet skis are a favorite rental, and the fly fishing is top notch around here, too.
Beyond the beach, there’s everything you need to relax, whether you’re planning to spend the night in Westerly or returning to one of the nearby cities. Restaurants serve the freshest seafood from nearby Block Island, and many of the eateries have outdoor seating where you can enjoy a meal with a view. There’s also some great shopping and nightclubs in view of the beach. Several hotels are close by, too, and they offer plenty of rooms that overlook the ocean.
