The best beaches in the world
Rhode Island beaches rim the shore of a small state with a long coastline. Thanks to the distinctive shoreline that winds along the mainland and its islands, you’ll find some 40 miles of open coastline. Much of this land is set aside for the public enjoyment, thanks to the state’s charter—so there’s plenty of places to enjoy some time at the shore. The list of fun things to do are as longs as the days in the height of summer, everything from lounging in the sun to feeling the winds in your sails from the deck of elegant boat.
As a small state—37 miles at its widest—all of Rhode Island is close to the sea. No point in the state is more than 30 minutes away from the shore. The Atlantic Ocean, Narragansett Bay, and Block Island Sound each offer a distinctive shoreline experience and some truly fantastic Rhode Island beaches.
Newport is a top-notch resort town waiting to be discovered. More than 40 beaches and natural spaces are open for the public’s enjoyment. Some beaches are best suited to fishing, while others are great for swimming or watching wildlife. All offer excellent views of the Narragansett Bay and Newport’s grand mansions.
A large state-managed beach is waiting at Misquamicut Beach in the town of Westerly in southern Rhode Island. This Atlantic Ocean beach features more than 3,600 feet of prime oceanfront land. In total, the state park is home to 102 lands nestled between the Ocean and Winnapug Pond. The beach is well-equipped for visitors with a large parking lot, picnic areas, and changing areas as well as seaside amusements like a carousel and go-karts.
A popular choice with surfers, kayakers and swimmers alike, Narragansett Town Beach really comes to life in the summertime. This sandy beach offers plenty of room to stretch out, go for a stroll, or just lounging in the sun. Throughout the warmer months of the year, this Atlantic Ocean beach is also a place to gather for special events and concerts, all steps away from changing rooms, a beach pavilion, and some of Narragansett’s shops.
