Newport Rhode Island has earned its reputation as a resort town. During the Victorian era, many of the barons of industry chose Newport as their vacation destination. More than century later, this town along the Narragansett Bay has grown into a getaway everyone can enjoy. Several of the grand mansions are open for tours, and more than 40 Rhode Island beaches and public access spots are located along the shore, in steps of some of the most scenic waters on all of the East Coast.
After the Gilded Age faded, the millionaires moved on and Newport faced the dimming of its legacy. Thanks to the work of the Newport Preservation Society, many of the grand mansions have been restored to their most elegant state. Several of the mansions, including The Breakers and Elms, are open for tours, allowing you the chance to peek inside and taste the past. At Astors’ Beachwood Mansion, costumed interpreters take on the guide of the family and servants who summered in Newport. These grand houses also provide a backdrop for special events, including the Newport Flower Show in June and a truly welcoming Christmas celebration at the end of the year.
Of course there’s more to Newport Rhode Island than its fancy homes. The city is home to a thriving waterfront, home to cafes with outdoor seating, hotels with a view, and some excellent shopping, along with many of the city’s most visited attractions. The International Tennis Hall of Fame, Museum of Yachting, and the Newport Art Museum are all easy to find close to the shore.
There’s no denying that the Newport beaches are the primary reason for many people’s trip to the shore. Much of the land has been carefully preserved and watched over, creating an abundance of places where you can spend time in the great outdoors. Whether you choose one of the beaches along the Newport Harbor or one of the oceanfront state parks, you’ll find wide-open stretches of sand and surf perfect for swimming, fishing, and having fun.
