Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras is an area in North Carolina that is known for its pristine beaches. In the Cape Hatteras National Seashore you won't find high-rise resorts along the sand, or much of anything else that is man made for that matter. Therein lies the appeal. A variety of Cape Hatteras villages provide proximity to the undeveloped beaches, not to mention everything else that the area has to offer. Many visitors to the area also base themselves in nearby Nags Head.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore extends for some 70 miles along the North Carolina coast. The beginning point is South Nags Head, and the preserve doesn't end until it reaches the Outer Banks barrier islands. In addition to villages such as Buxton, Waves, and Hatteras Village, the Cape Hatteras area features a wildlife refuge, and there are some charming cottages to choose from along the Pamlico Sound if wish to pass on the area hotels and campsites. As for things to do while staying in the Cape Hatteras area, the national seashore can be a great place to do some fishing, and the area is known for its wonderful windsurfing. Time might also be made for a Cape Hatteras Lighthouse visit. Found in Buxton, this lighthouse is the tallest operational lighthouse on the North American continent.

For many visitors, hanging out on the beach is the top option for things to do in Cape Hatteras. From the village of Hatteras, you can board a car ferry and venture off to Ocracoke Island, where more than fifteen miles of pristine beach await. From Ocracoke Island, it is possible to hop on another ferry to get to Cedar Island, where even more untouched beaches can be found. It's almost too good to be true, and these are just two of the options. The Cape Hatteras beaches are many, and you can easily do a lot of beach hopping if that is the aim. Many of the beaches have access parking lots, and it's just a short walk along a boardwalk over the dunes to get to the water.
