Nantucket

Nantucket
Nantucket, once the world’s whaling capital, is still a wealthy oceanfront town with plenty of sophistication to add to its name. Tiny Nantucket Island lies 30 miles from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and can thank tourism from saving it when the whaling industry disintegrated. Demanding preservation has ensured the maintenance of its glory throughout the years—and glorious it is. Nantucket Island has one main town, called Nantucket, which envelopes a yacht-laden harbor edged by affluent shops and charming inns along cobbled streets.

Almost all of the island’s 100+ miles of coastline is publicly accessible. Narrow and pummeled by crosscurrents and surf, Madaket Beach on the west creates ample opportunity for sunset watching in the evening. Surfside Beach attracts young and old alike to the southern region where a busy skate and cycle path meets an excellent swimming spot along powdery sand. Children’s Beach is aptly named, ideal for families looking for a convenient beach area. A playground, snack bar, and lifeguards keep them coming back.

Dining is pricey, but quality is right up there with price. Fresh lobster and other seafood are encountered nightly perusing menus around Nantucket. Nantucket Island restaurants at high-end harborside locations are worth a splurge, if only for amazing taste with an equally amazing view. From an island favorite of fried clams to the old-fashion soda fountain in town, Nantucket’s epicurean delights never fail to attract food lovers. Don’t miss shopping for exquisite items like custom jewelry, glass-blown art pieces, and local arts and crafts. The town is also renowned for specialty textiles like hand-made rugs and throws.

When out exploring attractions away from the beaches of Nantucket Island, head to the famous Whaling Museum. The museum illustrates the island’s whaling past through many exhibits including the 42-foot finback whale skeleton greeting visitors at the entrance. Island tours are popular and easily arranged, offering a comprehensive look at the island from ashore. The natural landscape of Nantucket is further explored via an aquarium, observatory, and science museum.
