Maryland beaches attract thousands each year to soak up the sun, play in the sand, and enjoy a bounty of activities afforded by immediate ocean access. Visitors easily find a variety of accommodations, dining, and activities for all budgets. Locals enjoy quick access to some of the best MD beaches, from Ocean City to several appealing offshore islands.
There’s no discussing Maryland beaches without bringing up Ocean City, the state’s premier ocean playground. Ocean City Beach is ten miles long and fairly broad too, accommodating thousands of summer swimmers and year-round anglers. Lined with dozens of hotels, restaurants, and shops, everything is conveniently at hand. Chesapeake Beach, less than an hour from Baltimore, follows closely behind in popularity, with a relaxing backdrop teeming with old-fashion flavor, quaint boutiques, a shopping center, and hotels.
Assateague State Park is another beach and park for camping, fishing, and wildlife watching. Camping is the only lodging option, and though daily visitors create bursts of activity, there’s a good chance to enjoy an almost entirely deserted beach at points. With a scenic location between Sinepuxent Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Assateague is the place to canoe, kayak, and swim at one of the best Maryland beaches, just 50 minutes from Washington DC.
North Beach is another of the premier MD beaches on Chesapeake Bay’s west side with ten blocks of beaches, tons of outdoor activities, and plenty of great views. From the wildlife refuge to rich tidal marshes, all types of life are visibly intertwined. Enjoy a fishing pier and boardwalk bordering a broad, sandy coast and scenic bike path. Sandy Beach completes the bay’s northern edge, outfitted with restrooms, showers, and change rooms. Sandy Point is one of the best MD beaches for swimming, crabbing, marina access, and more, all near attractive Annapolis.
