The best beaches in the world
Georgia sits in a prime location on the Atlantic Coast between the popular seaside vacation spots of South Carolina to the north and Florida to the south. The ideal geographical location portrays a landscape with stunning coastal environments, substantial maritime forests, salt marshes, and beaches.
Simply follow Georgia’s east coast from north to south and you’ll come across the best beaches here, many on islands. Georgia’s Sea Island totals more than 100 with a dozen most prominent ones numbering a dozen. These barrier islands are tucked into Georgia’s coastline. Several house national wildlife refuges brimming with estuaries and maritime forests. Some welcome visitors while others are restricted to wildlife.
First up is Tybee Island and smaller Little Tybee Island. Where one is a developed resort, the other (respectively) is a natural, uninhabited island favored by naturalists. Tybee Island is also conveniently near Savannah, popular from geographical convenience alone. Down the coast is Wassaw Island, a national refuge with almost ten miles of undeveloped beach offered for daytime use only as well as sea kayaking, fishing, cycling, and hiking. Ossabaw Island and St Catherines Island are both protected, open to researchers only.
There are several popular islands welcoming thousands of annual visitors with the first being Sapelo Island followed by Little Simons Island, restricted to 32 exclusive guests per night. Sea Island, St Simons Island, and Jekyll Island follow and are easily the biggest coastal attractions in Georgia after Tybee Island. Rounding off the list is Cumberland Island National Seashore, a secluded environment and easily one of the most enchanting of all Georgia’s beach areas.
Beyond tourists, these amazing Georgian backdrops attract a wealth of animal species, including the south’s beloved loggerhead turtles. Add in graceful migratory birds, amphibians, reptiles, and even wild horses, and Georgia’s appeal sores to another level. Georgia’s beaches protect treasured areas for the natural world, leaving thousands of acres untouched and pristine.
