The best beaches in the world
Northern California might not be known for its beaches, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t places here to work on your golden tan. Take Glass Beach for example, near Fort Bragg in MacKerricher State Park. This beach is not only a beautiful place to spend a few hours relaxing in the fun, but it is also known for its incredible variety of colored sea glass.
The beaches of Northern CA might not be as famous as some of the beaches in the southern section of the state, but they are still worth exploring. Some visitors choose to explore the beaches of the San Francisco Bay area, including Baker Beach and the scenic destination of Point Reyes National Seashore.
Beyond these options, one of the most popular beaches in the northern section is Glass Beach. The sea glass here has a strange origin; it is a result of local residents dumping garbage—including plenty of glass—into the ocean during the early twentieth century. A significant clean-up has taken place since then, but many of the colorful, rounded pieces of glass still remain, to the delight of visitors.
Glass Beach is also known for its rugged surroundings. You won’t find a beachfront boardwalk here, just grassy dunes and the opportunity to enjoy some fresh air or peace and quiet. Remember that the beaches of Northern California are affected by the seasons, so you won’t be going swimming during the winter months. Glass Beach is also a popular spot for photographers.
