Playa de Las Catedrales

Playa de las Catedrales
Las Catedrales Beach Galicia is one of the most impressive beach destinations in all of Spain. This may at first sound like an overstatement, especially given the fact that Spain offers over 5,000 miles of coastline and many lovely Spanish beaches. That is, until you see the beach firsthand, complete with its formidable cliffs, from which the beach takes its name: Playa de las Catedrales, which translates as Beach of the Cathedrals. Indeed, these impressive cliffs frame this enchanted beach to offer one of the most visually stunning and unforgettable experiences on mainland Spain.

Las Catedrales Beach is located in the province of Lugo in Galicia on the northwestern coast of Spain. It is specifically situated on the Cantabric Coast, looking out to the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the beaches on the north coast are substantially rougher than those on the Mediterranean coast in the southwest, but there are a fine mixture of beaches that are great for the kids, and others that are better for simply taking pictures or perhaps a walk. Las Catedrales Beach is a place where you can enjoy a bit of both.

During high tide, the beach actually appears to be pretty small, but there is plenty enough room for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. As a general rule, the beaches in this part of the country are far less likely to offer the range of public facilities and outdoor amenities, as do the resort destinations of the south. There are no lifeguards here and public facilities are few and far between. The real appeal of Las Catedrales is the sheer natural beauty of the beach and the unbelievable cliff formations.

The entire experience of visiting this beach is a memorable one. When the high tide washes up onto the shore, the beach loses hundreds of feet, and the water bubbles up against the sides of the cliffs. It is a truly extraordinary sight and visitors should be sure to bring their camera along with them. This is one of the most photographed beach destinations in Spain, largely because of the presence of the unique cliffs and the shape of the beach and its inlets. You may wish to take part in any number of water sports and activities, or perhaps a relaxing stroll is more your speed. Whatever your desired experience may be, Las Catedrales provides a dramatic backdrop for an inspiring day on the coast of Spain. The trails that run along the coastline afford exceptional vistas of the sea and the beach ensconced in cliffs below.

As with most of the beach resort destinations in Spain, you will find that there is a host of dining options within close proximity of Las Catedrales. The primary cuisine is Mediterranean, and you can count on there being an abundance of fresh seafood, as well as both traditional and contemporary fare. The range of guest accommodations near this beach includes a selection of hotels and resorts, as well as a variety of vacation rentals.

Las Catedrales Beach Galicia is without question one of the most picturesque and distinctive stretches of coastline in all of Spain. Guests are sure to appreciate the beauty of the beach as well as the array of fun things to do as a family or group of friends.
