Corsica

Corsica is the most mountainous island in the Mediterranean Sea, and you might also fancy the fact that it was Napoleon Bonaparte's birthplace. Situated closer to Italy than to France, the island is nonetheless a French territory and maintains French as the main commerce and media language. The local language of Corsican did not die out, however, and you can still hear it spoken on the streets and all around. As for other things that make this Mediterranean island so enticing, it is largely unspoiled, features some excellent beaches, and enjoys a wonderful climate.

Beautiful beaches ring the island of Corsica, and many of the best are small coves that have no name. Visitors can explore the coast in an attempt to find their favorite beach, though you might not get very far as they are all pretty spectacular. Rock formations accentuate the landscape at some, and the island's mountains serve as a wonderful backdrop in general.

There are scores of Corsica beaches that do have names, and they include Palombaggia. Quite possibly the most renowned beach on the island, this strip of sand in the far southern region is very scenic. The turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean might have you thinking that you are in the Caribbean, and the pines that back the white sand provide excellent depth. July and August days are often crowded at Palombaggia Beach, so you might try to arrive early to get a preferred spot.

Another named beach on the island of Corsica that is popular with visitors is Santa Giulia. Various watersports can be enjoyed at Santa Giulia Beach, and both cafes and bars line the sand. Calvi Beach also offers a lot for the watersports enthusiast, and it is also ideal for families with children.

There are Corsica beaches to fit every taste and preference, and lifeguards are on duty at most. As such, a certain amount of care should be taken when swimming and enjoying watersports, especially if no signs of a lifeguard are present.
