San Jose

San Jose
San Jose Costa Rica is the political and cultural capital of the Central America country. Nestled in the interior of the country, the city is the starting point for many beach adventures and a worthy place to explore on its own.

This modern city in Costa Rica’s central valley provides a home to more than 300,000 people as well as the national government. Its cultural heritage runs deep, and today the capital is home to fascinating museums and cafes where the coffee and conversation are something to savor. The architecturally significant National Theater hosts a year-round schedule of performances and special events.

Beyond its cultural offerings, San Jose has everything needed to turn a visit into a full-fledged vacation, including hotels, restaurants, and a network of buses that can get you anywhere you need to go. San Jose is also home to Costa Rica’s largest airport, which welcomes many flights from North America and Europe. The connecting flights and bus service from San Jose Costa Rica provide easy service to Costa Rica’s other interesting cities, including Limon on the Caribbean Coast and Liberia on the Pacific Coast.

As a landlocked city, San Jose Costa Rica has no beaches of its own, but all of its roads lead to the shore. It takes about three hours to drive to the Limon Province and four to six hours to make it to the pacific beaches in Guanacaste. The bus rides are typically longer with all the stops, but you can leave the driving to someone else this way. If you just can’t wait that long, the closest beach to San Jose is Jaco Beach, where the conditions are just perfect for surfing and there’s always a part to enjoy. Some quieter beaches are located nearby along the Pacific shore.
