Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo lies along Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast—no longer a quiet fishing village. Without feeling crowded or overgrown, this seaside town has grown into a place equipped for tourism. Many visitors begin their vacation with an arrival into San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, and a ride to coast. Whether you’re planning to rent a car or catch a bus, make sure you’re heading to the right Puerto Viejo. The one along the Caribbean Sea, properly called Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the beach town. Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí in the northeast is best known for its adventure tourism.

Puerto Viejo Costa Rica, the one along the beach, is located in the Limon Province, about three and a half hours from the capital. Some visitors will choose to check into their hotel or resort first, while others will make it right to the beach. The conditions are especially well suited for surfing, thanks to the waves the locals call the Salsa Brava. Another corner of the Puerto Viejo beaches is much quieter, with calm waters better suited to kayaking and swimming. The beaches also offer incredible diving and snorkeling access. Fishing charters and sightseeing cruises shove off the shore, heading out into the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean.
