Guanacaste Beaches
Guanacaste beaches are some of the best and most visited beaches in Costa Rica. This province, nestled along the Pacific Coast, has an abundance of natural beauty, including a long coastline dotted by sandy beaches and swaying palm trees.

The collection of beaches in Guanacaste Costa Rica is simply spectacular. Beaches run the gamut from quiet little places off the beaten path to to party hotspots where the fun never stops. Adventure seekers and those in search of relaxation will find the perfect beach to suit their personalities along the Pacific coast of Guanacaste.

Playa del Coco

Close to Golfo de Papagayo, the up-and-coming resort sector of Guanacaste Costa Rica, Playa del Coco is one of the most beautiful beaches along the Pacific Coast. It’s also one of the closest beaches from the airport in Liberia, which has regular flights to and from San Jose, the capital city. The chocolate-colored beach is popular with active souls and those who seek relaxation—even though it’s busy, Playa del Coco is never crowded. Surfers favor the waves, while scuba divers enjoy what lies under the surface. Many tour companies begin their diving excursions along Playa del Coco. The beach also is a favorite destination for sport fishing and sailing.

Playa Grande

A pristine beach and part of Marino Las Baulas National Park, Playa Grande has earned its place as one of the best Costa Rica beaches and one of the most scenic Guanacaste beaches. This long stretch of sand meets a clear blue sky in a place blessed with warm weather and sunny days throughout the year. Between October and May, the beach is only open during the day because this is  turtle nesting season. These gentle giants, actually leatherback sea turtles, leave the sea and come on shore to lay eggs and welcome the next generation of turtles into the world. Local guides lead turtle tours in season, ensure the safety of the nests. Even though turtles are common on the beach, there’s a lot for people to enjoy here. Playa Grande is one of the best places in Guanacaste Costa Rica for surfing. Some of the top surfers think the swells and breaks are some of the best in the country. The north edge of the beach is a little calmer, so it’s perfect for swimming and beachcombing. As a protected space, this beach is quieter than some of the others in the area. One hotel, located near the beach, offers welcoming and friendly accommodations. The staff can help suit you up with everything you need for fun in the sum, whether you want to go horseback riding on the shore or snorkeling under the sea.

Jaco Beach

On the other end of the spectrum, Jaco Beach is a place where the parties happen. Just a two-hour drive from the San Jose airport, Jaco Beach is one of the first places sun worshipers hit the beach after arriving in Costa Rica. Like many of the Guanacaste beaches, the conditions are just perfect for surfing. The waters are a bit choppy for swimming, but there’s plenty of fun to be found back on shore. Not far from the beach, you’ll find a laid-back coastal town packed with charming restaurants and hotels to suit every kind of budget.
