Costa Rica is home to some of the best beaches in the world. With a coast along the Caribbean Sea and another along the Pacific Ocean, this Central American country offers a wide variety of beaches. Some are favored by surfers because of the high waves and surf breaks. Other beaches are nestled in the middle of wild reserves, far off the beaten path, or steps away from luxury resorts. Whatever your vacation plans or styles, you’ll find a beach to suit you in Costa Rica.
Stretching from one ocean to the next, Costa Rica covers 19,652 square miles of land in between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. One of the world leaders in eco-tourism, the country preserves wide swatches of rainforest, mangrove forests, and other habitats favored by exotic wildlife. The beaches, too, set the stage for all types of eco-adventures, including snorkeling that can be enjoyed by almost anyone of any age.
Of the seven provinces in Costa Rica, two are home to the majority of the beaches. On the Caribbean Coast in the Limon Province, you’ll find long stretches of black- or white-sand beaches in some charming fishing villages. These quiet beaches are popular places for sun bathing and sport fishing. Across the country on the Pacific coast, many of the best Costa Rica beaches are fund in Guanacaste Province. Its beaches offer some of the best surfing around as well as resorts and towns well equipped for tourism.
Many vacations begin with a flight into San Jose, the national capital. Transportation is readily available to both coasts, whether you plan to rent a car or take the bus. A host of San Jose beaches are within a few hours’ drive or ride of the capital.
