The best beaches in the world
Port Antonio, which set the stage for several scenes in the movie Cocktail, has long been a favorite place to escape to for the rich and famous. This doesn't mean that the budget traveler should overlook it, however. Port Antonio offers both upscale hotels and budget hotels. It also offers some of the best beaches in Jamaica, and angling enthusiasts who make it to this destination on the far northeast side can enjoy some amazing deep sea fishing.
Hitting the local markets, partaking in fun eco-adventures, and simply relaxing are options for things to do when you aren't hanging out on a beach or fishing in Port Antonio. Many of the eco-adventures involve heading into the Blue Mountains, which rise to the near south of town. This is a relatively undeveloped part of Jamaica, so nature enthusiasts will be in heaven, or if you want a taste of one of the resort destinations on the island, it is just a short drive west to Ocho Rios.
One of the best beaches to escape to on a Port Antonio vacation is Frenchman's Cove Beach. Found about five miles east of town, this small beach is mostly known for fresh waters and its sandy bottom. Both swimming and snorkeling are fun pursuits at Frenchman's Cove Beach, and visitors can also get something to eat at the beachfront restaurant. Other facilities include showers for washing the sand off.
There are great beaches all around Port Antonio, and while you will have to pay to access some of them, the rates aren't exorbitant. Others that you might venture off to during a visit are Boston Bay Beach, which is about eleven miles away and is known primarily for its jerk pork. Also worthy of the trip out are San San Beach and Winnifred Beach.
